Your Freezer Makes Ice But Your Refrigerator Side Feels Like a Nairobi Afternoon
Your freezer is making ice perfectly. Frozen food is rock solid. But milk spoils in the fridge section within two days. Most technicians will tell you: 'The compressor is weak — replace the whole fridge.' They are wrong 80% of the time.
The Damper Door: A Component Most Nairobi Technicians Never Check
A small flap called a damper controls how much cold air travels from the freezer to the fridge section. When it sticks closed, the fridge warms while the freezer stays cold. When it sticks open, the freezer over-cools and develops ice buildup.
Why This Confuses Even Experienced Repair Shops
The compressor runs constantly trying to cool the warm fridge section, making it sound exactly like a failing compressor. A good technician does one simple test first: open the freezer, locate the vent to the fridge section, and feel for airflow while the compressor runs. No airflow? The damper is likely stuck closed.
Your Two-Minute Diagnosis Test at Home
- Empty the fridge section (temporarily)
- Remove the back panel of the freezer
- Locate the damper door — usually a white or black plastic flap
- Manually move it with your finger. Does it move freely or feel stuck?
