5 Things to Check in 5 Minutes Before You Call an Appliance Technician (Save KSh 1,500)
You're about to call a technician. Stop. There are 5 things you can check in 5 minutes that will either fix the problem or save you time on the phone.
The 5-Minute Pre-Call Diagnostic Checklist
1. Is it plugged in? (Seriously, check this first)
20% of "broken appliance" calls are unplugged cords or tripped GFCI outlets. Check the wall plug. Check your breaker box.
2. Is the door fully closed?
Washing machines, dishwashers, and dryers won't start if the door isn't latched. Push firmly. Listen for the click.
3. Is the filter clean?
Washing machine and dishwasher drainage problems are 70% dirty filters. Clean them — it's free.
4. Are the coils clean? (Refrigerators only)
Pull your fridge forward. Vacuum the coils. Constant running often stops immediately.
5. What error code is showing?
Modern appliances display error codes (dE, 5E, ER-F, etc.). Write down the exact code before calling.
What to Tell Us When You Call
Having this information ready cuts diagnosis time in half:
- Brand and model number (on a sticker inside the door or back panel)
- Approximate age (bought new 3 years ago? 8 years ago?)
- Exact symptoms and what you've already tried
- Any error codes displayed
"I had an error code dE on my LG washer. Googled it, cleaned the filter, problem solved. Saved a service call. Repair Ready's website had the guide." — Brian, Thika Road
