What Size Fridge Do You Actually Need? (Most Nairobi Homes Buy the Wrong Capacity)
You buy a washing machine. It's too small. You have to run 3 loads instead of 2. You buy a refrigerator. It's too big for your space. You can't open the door fully. Size matters — here's how to get it right.
Refrigerator Capacity (Liters)
- Single or couple: 150-250 liters (bar fridge or small upright)
- Family of 3-4: 300-400 liters (standard double door)
- Family of 5+ or entertain often: 450-600 liters (French door or side-by-side)
Washing Machine Capacity (Kilograms)
- 5-6 kg: Singles, couples, small apartments. Fits 1 bedsheet set OR 15-20 t-shirts.
- 7-8 kg: Family of 3-4 (sweet spot for most Nairobi homes). Fits 1 duvet OR 25-30 t-shirts.
- 9-10+ kg: Family of 5+, large items (curtains, comforters).
Oven Capacity (Liters)
- 30-45 liters: Small countertop oven. Roasts a small chicken. No baking multiple trays.
- 50-65 liters: Standard built-in or freestanding. Fits 2-3 trays. 4-6 people.
- 70+ liters: Large family or entertain often. Fits a turkey. 8+ people.
The Nairobi-Specific Factor: Door Swing Clearance
Measure not just the space where the appliance will sit, but also the clearance needed to open doors fully. For fridges: doors need 90°+ to slide out drawers. For washing machines: front-loader doors need 180° clearance to load laundry.
Pro Tip: Measure Your Doorways
The appliance must fit through your front door, hallway, and kitchen door. Measure the narrowest point. Add 5cm for moving clearance. Don't buy a fridge that won't physically enter your house.
"I bought a large fridge online. It arrived and couldn't fit through my kitchen door. Had to remove the fridge doors and partially take apart the door frame. Paid the delivery guys extra. Measure first." — David, Thika Road
