Is Your Appliance Still Under Warranty? Don't Pay Until You Check These 3 Things
Your appliance breaks. You remember it has a warranty. But does the warranty actually cover the repair? Most Nairobi homeowners don't know the difference between warranty and insurance — and it costs them.
Manufacturer Warranty (Free, But Limited)
Standard warranties: 1-2 years parts and labor. Some brands offer 5-10 years on the compressor only (not labor or other parts).
What voids warranty: Unauthorized repairs (opening the appliance yourself), using incorrect detergent, power surge damage, physical damage, lack of maintenance.
Extended Warranty (You Paid Extra)
Covers repairs after manufacturer warranty expires. Read the fine print: some extended warranties exclude certain parts, require pre-authorization, or have claim limits per year.
Home Appliance Insurance (Like Safaricom Home Care)
Different from warranty: pays for repairs regardless of cause (including accidental damage, power surges, even theft). Monthly premium: KSh 500-1,500. Often has a deductible (KSh 1,000-3,000 per claim).
Our Advice Before You Call Anyone
- Find your appliance purchase receipt or warranty card
- Check the warranty expiry date
- If under manufacturer warranty, call the brand's authorized service center first (repair may be free)
- If out of warranty or denied, call Repair Ready
What Repair Ready Provides Instead
We offer a 30-day repair warranty on all our work. If the same problem recurs within 30 days, we fix it at no charge. Some parts carry 90-day or 1-year manufacturer warranties (we pass these through to you).
"My LG fridge was 1 month out of warranty. LG wanted KSh 9,000 for a control board. Repair Ready fixed it for KSh 4,500 and offered a 30-day warranty. Saved me KSh 4,500." — Cynthia, Parklands
