Before You Buy That Refrigerator: What Nairobi Salespeople Won't Tell You About Inverter vs Non-Inverter
You walk into an appliance store. 30 different refrigerators. Prices from KSh 25,000 to KSh 150,000. Salesperson tells you "this one is good." How do you choose? Here's what actually matters for Nairobi homes.
Size: Measure Your Space First (Most Important)
Measure width, depth, and height of your fridge space. Account for door swing and ventilation clearance (5cm on sides and back). A fridge that doesn't fit will frustrate you every day.
Inverter vs Non-Inverter Compressor
Inverter (KSh 10,000-20,000 more expensive): Variable speed compressor. Uses 30-40% less electricity, quieter, lasts longer. Worth the premium if you keep the fridge for 5+ years.
Non-inverter: Cheaper upfront, higher electricity bills, shorter lifespan. Buy only if budget is extremely tight.
Frost Free vs Direct Cool
Frost free: Automatically defrosts. More expensive but worth it for Nairobi's humidity (manual defrost fridges ice up quickly here).
Direct cool: Requires manual defrosting every 2-3 months. Avoid unless buying a small bar fridge.
Energy Label (Look for Star Rating)
Kenya now requires energy labels on all new refrigerators. 5 stars = most efficient. A 5-star fridge costs more upfront but saves KSh 500-1,000/month on electricity.
Brands We Recommend (and Why)
LG and Samsung: Best inverter compressor technology. Parts available in Nairobi. Good warranty support.
Ramtons: Budget option but improving quality. Parts everywhere. Easy to repair.
Bosch and Liebherr: Premium build quality. Expensive parts. Long lifespan.
Avoid: No-name brands with no service center in Kenya. When they break, they're scrap.
"I almost bought a non-inverter fridge to save KSh 15,000. Repair Ready explained the electricity savings. I bought an inverter. It pays for itself in 2 years." — Patrick, Westlands
