Before the Rains Come: A Pre-Season Appliance Checklist for Nairobi Homes
Nairobi's rainy season brings higher humidity, power fluctuations, and muddy clothes — all of which stress your appliances. Prepare now to avoid breakdowns during the wet months.
Before Rainy Season Starts (October/November, March/April)
Refrigerator
Humidity causes door seals to sweat and frost-free systems to work harder. Check door seals with the paper test. Clean condenser coils. Ensure the fridge is level (so doors close by themselves).
Washing Machine
Rainy season means more loads (muddy clothes, wet school uniforms). The machine works harder. Run a cleaning cycle with vinegar. Clean the drain pump filter. Leave the door open between loads to prevent mold in high humidity.
Power Surge Protection
Rainy season brings lightning and power fluctuations. Install surge protectors on your refrigerator, washing machine, TV, and microwave. A KSh 2,500 investment saves KSh 10,000+ control boards.
Gas Cooker
Check gas hoses for cracking (humidity degrades rubber faster). Test for leaks with soapy water. If you smell gas at any time, call immediately.
During Rainy Season
Wipe down appliance exteriors weekly to prevent moisture damage. Don't overload your washing machine — wet clothes are heavier. Keep the area around your fridge dry (condensation is normal but pooling water isn't).
"Last rainy season, a power surge killed my neighbor's fridge control board. I had a surge protector installed after Repair Ready recommended it. My fridge survived." — Joseph, Thika Road
