Buying a Used Fridge on Jiji? 5 Tests to Run Before Handing Over Cash

Budget is tight. A new fridge costs KSh 40,000. A used one is KSh 15,000. The deal seems too good to pass up. But used appliances can be a bargain — or a money pit. Here's how to buy used without getting burned.

Where to Buy Used Appliances in Nairobi

Facebook Marketplace, Jiji, used appliance shops (Luthuli Avenue, Gikomba, Ngara), auction houses (bank repossessions). Each has different risks.

The Pre-Purchase Checklist (Bring With You)

Refrigerator

  • Plug it in. Does the compressor start within 30 seconds?
  • Feel the back. After 10 minutes, the back should be warm (condenser working).
  • Open the door. Does the interior light turn on? Does the door seal feel magnetic/tight?
  • Listen. Click-click-hum-stop every few minutes = failing compressor relay (easy fix, but negotiate price down).

Washing Machine

  • Run a short cycle. Does it fill, agitate (top-loader) or tumble (front-loader), drain, spin?
  • Listen for grinding noises during spin (bad bearings).
  • Check rubber door boot for cracks or black mold (KSh 3,000-6,000 to replace).

Oven/Cooker

  • Turn on each burner. Does gas ignite? Does electric element glow?
  • Set oven to 180°C. Does it heat? Use an oven thermometer if possible.

Red Flags That Should Make You Walk Away

  • "Was working when unplugged" (always test before buying)
  • Rust inside the appliance (indicates moisture damage)
  • Burnt smell
  • Missing parts (knobs, racks, shelves — can be impossible to find replacements)
  • No power cord (replacement is possible but adds cost)

What We Can Repair vs What Is Junk

Easy fixes: door seals, thermostat, heating elements, belts, fuses, relays. Cost KSh 1,000-5,000.

Expensive fixes: compressors, control boards, motors, sealed system leaks. Cost KSh 8,000-20,000. Usually not worth it on a used appliance.

"I bought a used Samsung fridge for KSh 12,000. It died after 2 weeks. Repair Ready quoted KSh 15,000 for a compressor replacement. I should have bought new." — Agnes, Embakasi
