The Hidden Filter at the Bottom of Your Washing Machine (Clean It or Pay KSh 5,000 Later)
Your washing machine fills, washes, and then stops. The timer continues advancing but nothing happens. Eventually, it gives an error code (often 'dE' or '5E' on LG and Samsung). Water won't drain. The problem: a clogged drain pump filter.
The Filter You Didn't Know Existed (But Should Clean Monthly)
Every front-loading washing machine has a drain pump filter — usually behind a small access panel at the bottom front. Its job: catch buttons, coins, lint, hairpins, and children's socks before they reach the pump.
How to Find and Clean Your Drain Pump Filter
- Unplug the machine.
- Locate the small panel at the bottom front corner (left or right).
- Place a towel underneath. Water (up to 2 liters) will drain out.
- Open the filter cap by turning counterclockwise.
- Remove debris (prepare for unpleasant smells).
- Clean the filter under running water.
- Replace and tighten.
Warning: Don't Open Without a Towel
The filter holds up to 2 liters of standing water. If you open it without absorbing the water first (some machines have a separate drain hose), your floor will flood. Watch a YouTube video for your specific brand before attempting.
When Cleaning Isn't Enough
If the filter is clean but the machine still won't drain, the drain pump itself may have failed (burned out motor, jammed impeller, or cracked housing). We test pump continuity and replace if needed: KSh 3,500-5,500.
"My LG washer showed error code dE. I cleaned the drain pump filter myself after watching a video. Found a small sock. Machine worked immediately. Saved myself a service call." — Kevin, Thika Road
